The TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 draw has set the stage for an intense tournament, with African powerhouses Nigeria, Egypt, and Morocco grouped together in a highly competitive Group B. The draw took place in Cairo on February 3, 2025, bringing excitement as teams prepare for the battle ahead.
Flying Eagles Face Tough Challenge in Group B
Seven-time champions Nigeria will go head-to-head with former winners Egypt and Morocco, alongside South Africa, making Group B one of the toughest in the tournament. As Africa’s most successful U-20 team, the Flying Eagles must overcome elite opposition to secure a FIFA U-20 World Cup spot.
A CAF official described the draw as one of the most competitive in recent history:
“There are no easy games at this level. We respect all our opponents, but our goal remains the same – to win and qualify for the World Cup.”
Host Nation Côte d’Ivoire Heads Group A
Hosts Côte d’Ivoire lead Group A, where they will face DR Congo, Ghana, Tanzania, and another UNIFFAC representative. With home support, Côte d’Ivoire aims to make a deep run, while Ghana, four-time winners and Africa’s only FIFA U-20 World Cup champions (2009), will look to reclaim continental dominance.
Senegal’s Title Defense in Group C
Defending champions Senegal were drawn in Group C alongside Zambia, Kenya, and Sierra Leone. After securing their maiden title in 2023, the Teranga Cubs are determined to defend their crown, but they must overcome strong opposition.
A CAF analyst described the draw as “balanced but unpredictable,” adding:
“Senegal will need to be at their best, as Zambia and Kenya are known for their fast, aggressive style of play.”
Path to FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025
Scheduled from April 26 to May 18, 2025, the tournament will see 13 teams compete for the U-20 AFCON title and four qualification spots for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.
With African giants, rising talents, and determined hosts in the mix, Côte d’Ivoire 2025 promises to be one of the most exciting editions in U-20 AFCON history.
