UNN Pro Chancellor seeks greater investment in education at convocation

Pro-Chancellor/Chairman Governing Council, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Kayode Olubunmi Ojo, has advocated for more investment in the education sector by all tiers of government as a credible way of restoring and regaining Nigeria’s educational glory and recognition.

According to him, such investments in the education sector would ensure that adequate facilities and modern infrastructure are provided to aid good learning and teaching.

Ojo made the advocacy at the University’s 54th convocation ceremony for the first degree and Post graduates degrees as well as honorary degree conferment on worthy individuals.

The UNN Pro Chancellor noted that the problems plaguing the Nigerian higher institutions were enormous, ranging from acute lack of facilities to infrastructural decay.

He said the dearth of facilities could potentially stifle the development of education in the country.

Ojo, however, expressed optimism that UNN would benefit immensely under the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the areas of infrastructural renewal, provision of modern facilities and adequate funding for research and innovations.

He outlined his major priorities as provision of adequate security and creating a conducive learning environment for scholarship, training and development.

On the academic progress, Ojo said the institution’s admission quota has improved as it has the capacity to admit more students unlike in the past when it was difficult for some diligent students to be admitted.

Also speaking at the event, the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, pledged Federal Government ‘s support to transform the institution with modern and befitting facilities in line with President Tinubu’s plan to upgrade tertiary institutions across the country.

The senator who disclosed the name of the institution is magical to the world said the school needed adequate security, digital learning facilities, good road as well pipe-bone water.

Exchanging views with journalists briefly after the event, Senator Bamidele noted that University of Nigeria is one of the institutions he always expected the best from at all times. The lawmaker said with the intervention of the new governing council, the university is expected to be the best in Africa.
