The Central Senatorial District Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has strongly opposed the faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, asserting that his affiliation with the All Progressives Congress (APC) disqualifies him from influencing their decisions.
This stance was declared following a caucus meeting in Calabar, where Mr. Tim Ekawu was unveiled as their candidate for the state congress scheduled for September 27.
The caucus attributed the PDP’s challenges in the state to transactional politics by some members. In a communiqué signed by State Secretary Anthony Edako, the caucus pledged unity to reclaim Cross River State and support the PDP’s bid for the presidency in 2027.
They endorsed the party’s decisions on the date and venue for the national convention set for November 15–16, in Ibadan, and expressed support for National Woman Leader Mrs. Amina Darasimi for her efforts in repositioning the PDP in the state.
The communiqué stated, “The meeting also express implicit support for the candidature of Anthony Edako as state secretary for the party in the upcoming congresses. The meeting without equivocation pledges its unalloyed support for the candidate of Tim Ekawu for the position of state chairman of PDP. The PDP after four years, needs the calm and level-headed leadership that Ekawu brings to the table.”
The Southern Senatorial District Caucus, which met earlier in the week, similarly criticized the tenure of incumbent state chairman Venatius Ikem, describing it as “riddled with conflict and divisive tendencies,” aligning with the Central Caucus’s push for new leadership.
