…exposed to digital rights, privileges
From Fred Ezeh, Abuja
Nigerian youths have been urged to fully maximise the potentials and opportunities that the technology offers for profitable ventures but should be cautious and must operate within the established law and regulations.
They were reminded that breach of data privacy and rights could attract severe punishment, hence the importance of proper knowledge of the workings of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulations (NDPR) for safe operation in the digital space.
Country Director, Accountability Lab Nigeria, Friday Odeh, dropped the charge at the youth data protection and voices in code event organised by the Accountability Lab Nigeria in collaboration with the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Federal Ministry of Youth Development in Abuja.
The event which also enjoyed the support and collaborations from partners such as the ActionAid, Arts on Humanity, Spaces for Change, Digicivic, and Paradigm Initiative, provided a meeting point between the youths who are most users and consumers of digital products, and others with a view to educating them on their rights on the digital spaces.
Mr. Odeh encouraged the youths to properly study the relevant laws and guidelines on the usage of digital tools and materials, suggesting they approach the right individuals and organisations for proper guidance.
He maintained that the digital space is a place where the good and bad meet. Hence, it’s important for the youths to align with the right tools in the digital space to avoid rights violations, which could attract severe sanctions.
Mr. Odeh said the Accountability Lab Nigeria has, over the years, being on the vanguard and strong push for the rights of the technology consumers, youths empowerment and development, as well accountability at the governance level for collective growth and development.
Representatives of government agencies and different other partners appreciated the efforts of the Accountability Lab Nigeria to the cause of youth empowerment, as well as the right knowledge and information regarding digital space.
They assured the youths of their availability and willingness to provide the right information, knowledge, and guide on how to safely navigate and maximise the potentials and opportunities that are abound in the digital space.
The youths were, however, entertained with lots of music, drama, talks, foods, and other forms of entertainment.
