From Timothy Olanrewaju, Maiduguri
Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum has called for tolerance and unity among different faiths especially as political activities kick off in the country.
Zulum gave the call in his Easter Message issued yesterday in Maiduguri by his spokesman, Mal Dauda Iliya
The governor said the Easter celebration which started last Friday and ran through Monday, underscores the essence of sacrifice, unity and love among Christians and other faiths especially in Borno State.
“It is heartening to observe the level of religious harmony between Christians and Muslims in the state. I urge all residents to sustain this spirit as we continue to take deliberate steps towards achieving lasting peace,” he said.
He urged the people to exercise restraint in their religious disposition to one another. He reiterated the importance of unity particularly in the current political climate.
“I want to remind us that Borno belongs to all of us. We must shun divisive tendencies, especially during this political period. We have embarked on a collective journey of recovery, and we must not allow enemies of peace to derail our progress,” he stressed.
While felicitating with Christians, Zulum described Easter as a sacred period that embodies sacrifice, forgiveness and love.
“As Christians across the world celebrate this year’s Easter which commenced on Friday, I warmly felicitate with my Christian brothers and sisters in Borno State and beyond,” he said.
He recalled that his administration has scaled up delivery of palliatives to 300,000 families to cushion the impact of the current economic hardship on the people. He assured of more support to the vulnerable population and needy in the state.
Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Borno State Chapter, Most Rev John Bakeni also urged Christians and Nigerians to roll away injustice, anger, hated, corruption and all vices that held the nation down.
While delivering a message at the CAN Easter Unity Service im Maiduguri on Monday, Bakeni tasked people to roll away all manner of ungodly acta as the angel of God pushed away the stone to allow Jesus Christ’s resurrection.
“As recorded in the bible, Matthew 28: 2: And Suddenly, there wqs a great earthquakes, for angel of the Lord; descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat on it. Let us therefore roll away hatred as the angel roll away the stone, disunity, injustice,” he told hundreds of worshippers at the unity service,” he said.
Bakeni who is also an auxiliary bishop of the Catholic Church Maiduguri Diocese, said the Easter is a celebration of Christ death and resurrection as well as victory over death.
He urged the people to hope in God for victory over despair, new begining over challenges of the past, and light over darkness.
