There are indications that Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) presidential, Gbenga Hashim may leave the opposition party, as the preparations for the 2027 gathers momentum.
Inside sources say Hashim is currently weighing the option of exiting the PDP, following the seeming collapse of efforts to reconcile the warring groups in the opposition party.
The PDP became polarized following a disagreement between the immediate past National Working Committee (NWC) led by Umar Damagum and loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the party”s National Convention in Ibadan.
The Damagum led NWC, with the support of the PDP governors, against the wish of the Wike camp held the Ibadan convention, where a new leadership headed by Tanimu Turaki was elected.
Immediately after the Ibadan convention, loyalists of the FCT Minister set up a 13 man caretaker committee headed by Abdulraham Mohammed to pilot the affairs of the opposition party pending the conduct of a fresh convention.
Last month , the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, on March 9 nullified the Ibadan convention. After the judgement, there were efforts to reconcile the two blocs.
However, the reconciliation moves did not succeed as the Wike camp held its own convention, in Abuja, last week, to elect new NWC members, while the Turaki led NWC has taken its case to the Supreme Court.
Consequently, it was gathered that Hashim, who has been making consultations across party lines, might exit the PDP, so as not to jeopardize his bid for the presidency in the 2027 polls.
“For Dr. Hashim, the implications are clear. Remaining within a fractured and potentially compromised structure could undermine both his presidential ambition and his long standing commitment to democratic plurality.
“His ongoing consultations across party lines suggest a deliberate effort to build or align with a broader coalition capable of resisting the emergence of a one party dominant system in Nigeria.
“This moment may well represent a turning point, not just for Hashim, but for the future of opposition politics in Nigeria. If key actors begin to exit or disengage from the PDP, the party could face a rapid decline in relevance, paving the way for a new political alignment to emerge,” a source stated.
