Angwan Rukuba Attack: Archbishop Martins condemns killings, urges faith and responsible leadership at Easter

By Philip Nwosu

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Adewale Martins, has condemned the recent terrorist attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, which claimed the lives of over 27 Nigerians on Palm Sunday, describing the incident as tragic and deeply disturbing.

In his Easter message delivered through the Director of Social Communications, Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, the Archbishop expressed sorrow that such an attack occurred on a day sacred to Christians, noting that it underscores the worsening insecurity in the country.

He criticised government efforts at addressing the security situation, stating that authorities have consistently failed to fulfil their responsibility of protecting lives and property despite numerous assurances. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their loved ones.

While condemning the persistent killings across the country, Archbishop Martins called on leaders at all levels to prioritise human lives over politics. He stressed that the welfare, security, and dignity of citizens must take precedence over political considerations and personal ambitions.

The cleric also decried the rising cost of petroleum products, describing it as an indication of poor economic prioritisation that continues to inflict hardship on Nigerians.

He urged public office holders to demonstrate sacrificial leadership, drawing inspiration from Christ, and to take decisive action to end insecurity and improve citizens’ welfare. According to him, leaders who fail to meet these expectations should consider stepping aside for more competent hands.

Archbishop Martins further called on Nigerians to be actively involved in the electoral process as the next general elections approach, stressing the importance of choosing leaders with integrity, sincerity, and the fear of God.

Despite the prevailing challenges, the Archbishop encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope, emphasising that the message of Easter, Christ’s resurrection, remains a powerful symbol of victory over suffering, darkness, and despair.

He urged citizens to strengthen their faith, foster unity, and become agents of peace and reconciliation in their communities.

The Archbishop also prayed for the repose of the souls of victims of insecurity across the country, particularly in Sokoto, Maiduguri, and Plateau states, and asked God to grant comfort to bereaved families.

He wished all Nigerians a safe, peaceful, and blessed Easter celebration.
