Rivers Chief Judge pledges stronger judiciary support
From Sola Ojo, Abuja
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday announced the arrest of 92 suspected internet fraudsters in Benin City, Edo State.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the arrests were carried out by operatives of the Commission’s Benin Zonal Directorate during a sting operation on Monday, September 29, 2025.
According to him, the operation, which took place at different locations across Benin City, followed “credible intelligence” on the suspects’ alleged involvement in computer-related crimes.
Items recovered from the suspects include 11 vehicles and mobile devices.
Preliminary investigations, EFCC said, linked the suspects to various forms of internet fraud.
“They will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” Oyewale said.
Meanwhile, in Port Harcourt, Justice Simeon Amadi pledged that the judiciary under his leadership would maintain and strengthen its working relationship with the EFCC.
He gave the assurance while receiving the newly appointed Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE I Hassan Saidu, who paid him a courtesy visit.
“The relationship between the Rivers State Judiciary and EFCC has always been cordial, and during my tenure it will continue.
“We will always do our best to maintain this relationship. One of the ways to enhance it is exactly what you have done today, coming here,” Justice Amadi said.
The Chief Judge, however, highlighted manpower shortages as a major challenge affecting the handling of EFCC cases in the state, noting that Commission staff were burdened with matters at both the State High Court and Federal High Court levels.
He suggested the appointment of additional judges to fast-track EFCC trials.
Responding, Saidu said his visit was to formally announce his assumption of office and seek further collaboration with the judiciary, adding that the indispensable role of the courts in the anti-corruption fight.
“We have no one in our career as important as the judiciary. Without the judiciary, all our work will be to no avail,” he said.
