Gombe: Governor Yahaya’s 3G Project plants 10,500 trees to Green Tumfure

From Abdulrazaq Mungadi, Gombe

The Gombe State Government has planted 10,500 trees across newly constructed roads and residential areas in Tumfure community under the Gombe Goes Green (3G) Project, a flagship initiative of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

The 3G Project, launched in 2019, aims to plant one million trees annually to combat desertification, restore degraded lands, and strengthen the state’s resilience against climate change. Officials said the Tumfure exercise is part of a broader plan to integrate sustainability into Gombe’s rapid urban growth.

Governor Yahaya has consistently stressed that infrastructure development must go hand-in-hand with environmental conservation. “Infrastructure without greenery is incomplete. Our goal is to create a liveable environment where nature and development thrive together,” the governor noted at the launch of the program.

Tumfure, one of the fastest-developing communities in Gombe metropolis, has seen a surge in residential estates, commercial hubs, and road expansion in recent years. However, residents have also faced environmental challenges such as dust storms, heat, and erosion. According to one of supervisor of the tree planting exercise in Tumfure, by planting trees along road corridors and residential layouts, the government seeks to beautify the area, improve air quality, reduce erosion, and provide shade for pedestrians.

He explained that community participation is central to the project’s sustainability, urging residents, traditional leaders, and youth groups in the area to mobilize and nurture the seedlings to ensure high survival rates.

A resident, Malam Muhammad Abdullahi, expressed optimism saying, “for years, this area has been bare and hot. These trees will change our lives. We must protect them for our children”.

He expressed a believe that the tree planting initiative has more than environmental gains, as it is expected to raise property values, attract investment, and create modest economic benefits through fruit.
