The Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) has stated that Women’s voices and leadership are critical to community development.

State Chairperson of WOWICAN, Lady Member Amishiave, gave the assertion during the association’s International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration held at the CAN Secretariat in Makurdi, where food items were distributed to selected widows.

Amishiave lauded the Governor Hyacinth Alia-led administration for demonstrating commitment to creating opportunities for women, enabling them to live with dignity and contribute meaningfully to society.

She said following the gender sensitive policies of the State Governor, Benue State was emerging as a safe and enabling space for women and girls.

She said “We are seeing a deliberate effort to build a society where women and girls can thrive with freedom, dignity and equal opportunity. Women’s voices and leadership are critical to community development.”

She, however, called for sustained action to dismantle barriers confronting women across workplaces, religious institutions, families and communities.

In a lecture at the event, Dr. Abigail Gire urged widows to remain resilient despite economic hardship and insecurity in the country, urging them to support their families and extend help to others.

Gire, the Assistant Secretary, WOWICAN North Central, who spoke on the theme “Give to Gain,” drew lessons from 1 Kings 4:8–17, describing giving as a divine principle that leads to multiplication.

Also, the Vice Chairman of CAN, Benue State Chapter, Rev. Jonathan Ugbede, commended WOWICAN for their activities and encouraged them to sustain its advocacy and humanitarian efforts.

He lauded the collaboration between faith-based groups and government in advancing gender inclusion and social support systems across the state urging all stakeholders to keep doing good to humanity.
