Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has firmly denied endorsing any candidate for the governorship or other political offices in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that such decisions rest solely with the Chief Ferdinand Alabraba-led Elders Council.
Speaking at a joint gathering of stakeholders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at his official residence in Life Camp, Abuja, on Monday night, Wike clarified his stance amid swirling speculations. He stressed that his sole political commitment remains unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu.
“I have not endorsed anyone,” Wike declared, adding, “such decisions remained the responsibility of Chief Ferdinand Alabraba led Elders Council.” He emphasised that the Elders would soon meet to deliberate and decide on endorsements, urging aspirants to respect the process.
The former Rivers State governor warned against repeating “the mistakes of previous election cycles,” asserting, “no governor from any state can impose a candidate on Rivers State.” Wike praised the State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, for their pivotal role in ongoing political developments.
Addressing the coalition of APC and PDP stakeholders, Wike called for unity and dedication to Rivers State’s interests. “Only those who are genuinely dedicated to this cause will benefit,” he said, cautioning against “the rush for endorsements” and internal divisions fueled by personal ambitions.
The minister highlighted the group’s strength as rooted in unity, not financial muscle, and warned of external forces plotting to fracture their alliance. “If we were not working together, if we were not united, it would be difficult. People are not happy that we are working together, so they will do anything to ensure we are divided,” Wike stated.
Wike expressed dismay at individuals who, after securing appointments through the group’s efforts, now criticize its leadership. He labeled such actions a “failure of character,” warning that deceitful attempts to upstage others would fail.
Reaffirming his position, Wike dismissed rumours of private endorsements, noting consistency between his public and private stances. “The only endorsement currently recognized by the group is for the Presidency… the group has officially endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he maintained.
He commended Council Chairmen, Rivers elders, and party leadership for coordinating the inclusive meeting, pointing to the lack of complaints as evidence of its success.
