Nigeria’s turnaround depends on our choices-Borno CAN Chairman

From Timothy Olanrewaju, Maiduguri

Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Borno State, Bishop John Bogna Bakeni said the turn-around of Nigeria’s economic and political situation depends largely on the right choices of Nigerians.

Bakeni who spoke to journalists shortly after a CAN Unity Service held in Maiduguri to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, said the right choices by Nigerians are critical to addressing the current economic and political challenges in the country.

“As I said in my message on the pulpit, Nigerians must make the right choices. We must hold our leaders at every level accountable. We must choose to do the right thing and be deliberate in our choices of good over evil. We must not just desire a good country but must make the right choice to work it out” he declared.

Quoting 1 Corinthians Chapter 10 verse 6, ‘We should not lust after evil thing as they also lusted,’ in his sermon, the CAN leader urged Christians and Nigerians to eschew evil acts.

He said God warned the Corinthians through Apostle Paul to desist from their wicked deeds so that they will not suffer same consequences experienced by their forefathers who lusted after evil.

Bakeni, an Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, urged families to revisit their households and monitor their children to tackle evil acts including kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, separatist agitation, corruption, dishonesty, tribalism or ethnicity which currently exacerbate tension, insecurity and hunger in the land.

The independence unity service attended by church leaders, priests, pastors, and the Christian worshippers at St John Anglican Church, Maiduguri, was organised by the Maiduguri Metro CAN in conjunction with the State CAN.

Metro CAN Coordinator, Pastor Timothy Olanrewaju commended the people for daring all odds, especially the economic situation in the country, to attend the service.

He said the annual gathering of Christian aims at thanking God for His grace upon the land and also pray for CAN, Borno, family and Nigeria.
