Okongwu eyes D’Tigers spot for AfroBasket

U.S.-based Atlanta Hawks centre, Onyeka Okongwu, has shown interest in representing Nigeria’s D’Tigers at the upcoming FIBA AfroBasket 2025 tournament.

The event is scheduled for Angola, from Aug. 12 to 14, across three cities: Benguela, Luanda, and Namibe.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 23-year-old NBA star, born to Nigerian parents, hopes to shine on the global stage.

If confirmed, Okongwu’s inclusion would bolster Nigeria’s frontcourt as the team aims to reclaim dominance in African basketball.

Known for shot-blocking, rebounding, and strong interior defence, the Hawks player could make a significant impact for the D’Tigers.

NAN reports that Nigeria remains a strong contender, and Okongwu’s involvement would further raise expectations.

Tunisia are the defending champions, while Nigeria last won the title in 2015.
