The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one Kelvin Izekor for allegedly murdering his wife, Success Izekor, in Benin City on Saturday.
A viral video showed police officers and residents retrieving the woman’s lifeless body from her apartment. The deceased, aged 38, had deep machete wounds on her head.
Tragic Incident Shocks Community
The couple was newly married, and residents expressed disbelief over the tragic event. “Imagine being killed by your own husband. They were newlyweds, and nobody expected such a fate,” said a shocked neighbor who spoke anonymously.
The Edo State Police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, confirmed in a statement on Sunday that the suspect was nearly lynched by an angry mob before the police intervened.
Police Intervention and Investigation
According to Yamu, officers from the Aduwawa Division received a report around 10:00 PM on February 22, stating that Kelvin Izekor had allegedly killed his wife at their residence on Upper Mission Extension, Benin City.
“Upon arrival, operatives found the victim’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood with deep head wounds. It took serious efforts to pacify the mob, rescue the suspect, and take him into custody,” Yamu stated.
The victim was rushed to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
Authorities Condemn Domestic Violence
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, condemned the rising cases of domestic violence and assured a thorough investigation into the incident. She emphasized that anyone found guilty would face the full force of the law.
The police have urged the public to report signs of domestic abuse, stressing the need for increased vigilance in cases of marital violence.
