REA Expands Solar Access With Regional Off Grid Power Initiative

REA ROGEAP Solar Power Initiative

REA ROGEAP Solar Power Initiative marks a major step in expanding electricity access across underserved communities in Nigeria. In February 2026, the Rural Electrification Agency signed a partnership with ECOWAS to deploy solar power systems to critical public institutions.

Importantly, the agreement includes a $700,000 grant to support the electrification of 15 health and education facilities using solar photovoltaic systems.

As a result, the initiative strengthens access to reliable and clean energy in key sectors.

A Regional Effort To Address Energy Poverty

The REA ROGEAP Solar Power Initiative operates under the Regional Off Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP). This programme is supported by the World Bank and focuses on expanding off-grid electricity access across West Africa.

Moreover, the project represents Nigeria’s pilot implementation phase within the regional framework.

Therefore, it highlights how regional collaboration can drive national development.

Targeting Schools And Health Facilities

The initiative focuses on electrifying rural health centres and schools across the Federal Capital Territory, Niger State, and Nasarawa State.

In addition, providing solar power to these institutions improves healthcare delivery and enhances learning conditions.

Furthermore, reliable electricity reduces dependence on diesel generators and lowers operational costs.

As a result, communities benefit from improved public services and sustainability.

Strengthening Implementation And Partnerships

To ensure effective execution, REA will serve as both the technical and financial implementing agency.

Moreover, a dedicated Project Implementation Unit will coordinate activities alongside regional partners and a steering committee.

In addition, collaboration with state governments, particularly Niger State, supports co-financing and monitoring.

Therefore, this multi-level partnership improves coordination and delivery efficiency.

In Conclusion,The REA ROGEAP Solar Power Initiative represents a strategic shift toward sustainable and inclusive energy development in Nigeria. By targeting critical institutions such as schools and healthcare centres, the project delivers direct impact where it is needed most.
