President Bola Tinubu led national and international dignitaries in bidding farewell to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was laid to rest on Tuesday at his residence in Daura, Katsina State.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the solemn occasion began with the arrival of Buhari’s remains from London at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, where large crowds gathered to honour the former leader. President Tinubu, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, Niger Republic Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, former Niger President Issoufou Mahamadou, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, governors, and business and political leaders, personally escorted the late President’s body on the hour-long journey to Daura.

At the late President’s residence, a brief lying-in-state ceremony was conducted, followed by the Salatul Janazah (funeral prayer) led by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, Imam of the Central Mosque in Daura.

President Tinubu and Buhari’s close family members witnessed the interment at 5:50 p.m.

The state funeral was marked with full military honours, including a reveille and a 21-gun salute, underscoring the nation’s respect for the former leader’s legacy.

A week-long programme of mourning and tributes will continue, starting with a condolence visit to Buhari’s family by a Presidential Committee later on Tuesday.

Throughout the ceremony, President Tinubu and other dignitaries emphasised their profound respect and tribute to Buhari’s service to Nigeria, ensuring his final journey was met with dignity befitting a former Head of State.
