Tinubu’s Jos remark revives his ‘don’t vote for me’ promise – Obi

From Sola Ojo, Abuja

Following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s remarks during a brief visit to Jos, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi on Saturday accused him of validating his own campaign pledge on electricity supply.

The presidency claimed to have met with Plateau people at the airport due to poor visibility, which would prevent Mr. President’s Air Force One from taking off at dusk. This was attributed to poor electricity at the airport.

Obi on his verified ‘X’ handle, recalled Tinubu’s 2023 campaign promise that Nigerians should not re-elect him if he fails to deliver stable electricity within four years, arguing that current realities in the power sector fall short of that commitment.

He noted that Nigeria’s power generation has remained below 4,000 megawatts on average since Tinubu assumed office in 2023, while electricity tariffs have increased, placing an additional burden on consumers.

Obi further claimed that Nigeria’s per capita electricity consumption remains significantly low compared to the African average, citing figures of about 144 kWh for Nigeria against 617 kWh across the continent.

The former Anambra State governor also criticised the President’s brief stopover in Jos on April 2, 2026, where he reportedly spent about 10 minutes before departing.

To Obi, Tinubu attributed the short visit partly to the lack of electricity at the airport.

He argued that the comment reflects a disconnect between leadership and the realities faced by Nigerians, many of whom experience prolonged power outages on a daily basis.

Obi said the situation underscored what he described as a pattern of unfulfilled promises and called on Nigerians to hold leaders accountable, particularly on critical issues such as power supply.
