The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has urged Nigerians to reflect on the enduring legacy of the late President Muhammadu Buhari. According to a statement issued by Director, Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the SGF made the call on Sunday during a National Church Service held to mourn the former President.
Describing Buhari as a “disciplined and principled leader,” Akume emphasized that the late President’s life exemplified “conviction, patriotism, and integrity.” He acknowledged Buhari’s imperfections but highlighted his perseverance, saying, “Though not perfect, he fought a good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.” He noted that Buhari’s contributions to national security, social protection, and institutional reforms — including the Petroleum Industry Act — are major milestones in Nigeria’s development history.

The SGF also praised President Bola Tinubu for approving the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri. Akume described the renaming as “not merely symbolic,” but as an inspiration for future generations “to lead with courage and sacrifice, as President Buhari did.”
The memorial service was attended by a cross-section of Nigeria’s leadership, including Deputy Senate Majority Whip Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, members of the National Assembly, ministers, senior government officials, former SGFs, retired Permanent Secretaries, and other dignitaries.
